OpenSolaris
OpenSolaris is an open source project by Sun Microsystems with the source code licensed under the CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License). The Open Solaris project has bi-weekly developer builds and a planned six monthly release cycle for supported releases, the first of which is 2008.05 released in May 2008.
The OpenSolaris CD runs as a live CD which you can boot directly from and run off the CD without having to install anything to your computer. Once you have a running desktop you can install it to your computer if you choose by clicking the installer icon on the desktop.

OpenSolaris 2008.05 was released in May 2008 and includes a network-based package management system (IPS), the GNOME desktop, and LiveCD technology supported on AMD64, Pentium, and Xeon EM64T platforms.
