Edubuntu Linux

Edubuntu Linux is a free Ubuntu derived Linux distribution designed for use in classrooms. The aim is that an educator with limited technical knowledge and skill will be able to set up a computer lab, or establish an on-line learning environment, in an hour or less, and then administer that environment without having to become a Linux expert.

Because it is based on Debian, Edubuntu Linux uses the deb package format and can be updated using the Synaptic package management tool from the Ubuntu repositories. Synaptic is a GUI based tool for installing, updating and deleting installed packages on the system.

Edubuntu Linux 8.04

To install Edubuntu 8.04 you first install Ubuntu 8.04 and then install it from the Add Ons CD. The two CD sets contained here each have two CDs: the appropriate Ubuntu live/install CD and then the Edubuntu Add Ons CD. We also have a single CD set containing just the Add Ons CD, but please be aware you must already have an Ubuntu install CD.

The live/install CD sets boot up directly from the CD and then have the option to install; the alternate install CD boots into a text mode installer with additional installation options.
