Fedora Linux

The Fedora Project is an offshoot from Red Hat Linux and was created by Red Hat in September 2003 after they discontinued Red Hat Linux at version 9. Red Hat use the Fedora Project as a proving ground for new technology which will eventually make it into their commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux product, and have a more open development process which allows the community to contribute to the project.

Please note the current version of Fedora is now Fedora 9

Fedora Core 5 was released on March 20th 2006. We have 62 screenshots of Fedora 5 here mainly covering the installation process and also showing briefly the Gnome and KDE desktop managers.

The Fedora Core 5 release summary is available here and release notes here. Fedora Core 5 does not come with support for Java, MP3, Real Media or DVD playback - more information about "forbidden items" can be found here.

Please note that at the time of release the Fedora Core 5 kernel does not permit the loading of non GPL modules into the kernel; this means modules such as nVidia's graphics drivers cannot be loaded into the kernel and used. A kernel fix is due to be made in a few days which will allow proprietary modules to be loaded.
